The district of Chhindwara is situated in Madhya Pradesh state of India, the town of Chhindwara being the Headquarters and municipality of the district. Chhindwara district is part of Jabalpur Division. It is the administrative headquarters of Chhindwara District, the people of this district speak a Dravidian language written in Devanagari script and spoken by almost 2, 00,000 members of the Bharia tribe.
History of Chhindwara
In olden times Chhindwara was ruled by the most powerful of his dynasty King Bakht Bulund till 3rd century, he adopted the religion of Islam during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb; his kingdom was spread over the hills of Satpura range. An ancient plaque which belonged to "Rashtrakut" dynasty was found in the village of "Neelkanth". The Rashtrakut dynasty ruled this place till 7th Century followed by The Gondwana dynasty, during their reign Deogarh was the capital town. The fort of Devgarh was built by King 'Jatav' of Gond community. From time to time the place was ruled by distinct dynasty finally ended by the Maratha in 1803. On 17th September, 1803 the East India Company took over this kingdom by defeating Raghoji II Bhonsle, post Independence 'Nagpur' was the new Capital of Chhindwara District, and after the re-constitution on November 1, 1956 the district of Chhindwara was declared as the capital.
Chhindwara Culture
The majority of inhabitants of Chhandwara district are tribals of Gond, Pardhan, Bharia and Korku. Varied languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Gondi, Urdu, Korku, Musai, Parvari etc are spoken by the inhabitants. The tribals mainly speak Gondi and a mix of Hindi and Marathi. Pola, Bhujalia, Meghnath, Akhadi, Harijyoti etc. are the major festivals celebrated here. The 'Gotmat Mela' the major fair that attracts tourists from all across the world. On the occasion of Shivrathri 'Mahadev Mela' is celebrated every year on "Choudagadh" with great pomp and show.
The climate of Chhindwara is subtropical, summer from April June is and dry hot followed by monsoon rains from July September and a cool and moderate dry winter. The average annual rainfall is 1,183 mm. the lowest temperatures during winter ranges from 4 to 6 degree Celsius and the highest temperatures during summer reaches from 38 to 42 degree Celsius.
