Chandrapur History
Chandrapur was an independent district in 1854. In 1874, it comprised of three tehsils, Warora and Bramhpuri. The upper Godavai district of Madras was abolished in 1874 and a new tehsil was made by adding four tehsils to Chandrapur. Sironcha was made its headquarters. The headquarters of a tehsil were first transferred to Mul and then to Chandrapur in 1895. In 1905, a new tehsil was created from the transference of the zamindari estates from Bramhpuri and Chandrapur tehsils. Gadchiroli was made its headquarters. A small zamindari tract from Chandrapur district was transferred to a newly formed district in 1907. The Madrad got a portion of 1560 square kilometers in the same year. This portion consisted of three division of the lower Sironcha tehsil. The former Central Provinces became the state of Madhya Pradesh post Independence. No major changes occurred regarding the boundaries during 1911-1955. Based on lingual factors, the Marathi speaking district of Chandrapur was transferred from Madhya Pradesh to Bombay in 1956.
The state of Hyderabad had a district named Adilabad. Under that, a tehsil was present named Rajura. It was transferred to Nandel district and subsequently to Chandrapur district in 1959. The state of Maharashtra came into existence in 1960 and since then, Chandrapur is a part of it. In 1981, due to administrative difficulties, it was divided into Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
