The state of Manipur, located in the north-eastern part of India, constitutes of a total of nine districts, out of which the district of Chandel is one. Tengnoupal is the previous name of the district. This district ranks first among all the districts of the state in regard to having the lowest number of inhabitants; Tamenglong ranks first in the same category. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in the town of Chandel. Situated in the districts extreme southern portion, Moreh Town is known to be a significant commercial base n between Manipur and the country of Myanmar.
Aimol, which is a Sino-Tibetan language, is another language that is spoken here. A lesser amount of people, which is around less than 3000 people, speaks this particular language. It is written in Latin Script. One more Sino-Tibetan Language that is being spoken in here is Anal. Roughly around 14,000 Indian people and some more Myanmars people speak this language. The district shares its borders on the south with Myanmar, on the east by the district of Ukhrul and on the south and west by Churachandpur District, while the district is bounded by the district of Thoubal on the northern frontier. The distance between the district and Imphal is 64 kilometers. The district contains the National Highway Number 39.
A number of different communities of people reside in this district. The district is dotted with roughly around 20 distinct tribes, who live here. Anal, Lamkang, Kuki, Moyon, Monsang, Chothe, Thadou, Paite, Maring and Zou are some of the important tribes. Other than tribal groups, other groups such as Meitis also dwell here. A little number of Muslims is also there. Settlements of Nepalis, Tamils, Bengalis, Punjabis and Biharis, who are originally not from Manipur are present in the district. The districts extreme southern portion contains the town of Moreh, which is known to be an international commercial hub of the state of Manipur. The district of Chandel will become an entrance to the Asian countries will be obtained upon the construction of the Trans-Asian Super Highway.
From the view point of security of India, Chandel has done a good job, although it is believed to be an underdeveloped district. Chara Nicholas Mayon, S. Gemithang, and NL Benaingvir Mayon had given their lives as a sacrifice for their country in the Kargil War. Their names would always be memorized by all citizens of India as Indias Martyrs.
