Bundi History
In 1804, Colonel Monson was assisted by Rao Raja Bhan Singh, in his disastrous retreat before Holkar. In revenge for this action the Maratha Empire and Pindaris repeatedly attacked and destroyed his state and compelled the kingdom to pay tribute up to 1817. This resulted in signing of a treaty of alliance between Bishan Singh and the Birits East India Company on 10th February 1818. The treaty brought Bishan Singh under their shelter. Bishan Singh built the pleasure palace of Sukh Niwas on the suburbs of Bundi.
Colonel James Tod was given the charge of the guardianship of 11 year old son of Bishan Singh, when Bishan Singh was dying of cholera. Maharao Raja Ram Singh became a much admired ruler. He instigated economic and administrative reforms and set up schools in order to teach Sanskrit. He sat on the throne for 68 years. He was regarded as an impressive example of the Rajput gentleman ad also as the most conservative prince in conservative Rajputana. His reign was well-liked by the people as well as beneficial. His approach and actions during the mutiny of 1857 was equivocal. However the British had confidence in him. He was made G.C.S.I and a counselor of the empire in 1877 and C.I.E in 1878. Maharao Bahadur Singh also backed the British. He assisted them in the Burma campaign. He earned the Military Cross for his heroism and bravery before succeeding to the throne.
