The district of Bhind is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh of central India. The district headquarters is located in the town of Bhind. The district lies in the northwest part of the state, surrounded by Agra, Etawah, Jalaun and Jhansi districts of Uttar Pradesh to the north and the east, district of Datia towards the south, Gwalior towards the southwest, and Morena towards west. The geographical illustration of the place constitutes irregular ravines, plain fertile fields and scarce forests. Bhind has fertile soil and it receives appropriate irrigation from the wide canal systemand the neighboring regions of Chambal, Kali Sind, Kunwari or Kwari, the Rivers of Pahuj and Baisali. The Four tehsils, Bhind, Mehgaon, Gohad and Lahar altogether formed the district of Bhind but later on the tehsils of Ater, Mihona, and Raun too happen to be the part of the Bhind district.
History of Bhind
Bhind was named after the Hindu saint Vibhandak Rishi alias Bhindi Rishi. In Vedic period the son of king Yayati, Yadu ruled this region. In the Mahabharat Era, this region was ruled by Chedi King Shishupal who acquired a prominent position during the era of Mahajanapada. Later on King Yadav Krishna established his kingship in this area followed by the the ruler ship of Chandels. Later on riyaz defeated Chandels and brought Bhind under Chauhan Dynasty. Afterwards it was ruled by Narwarias in the north and Jats in the south. Jawaharlal Nehru the Prime Minister of India at that juncture inaugurated the State of Madhya Bharat, on 28 May 1948 at Gwalior. Scindia was appointed as Rajpramukh and Holkar took as Up-Rajpramukh. Once acquiring their offices they decided to divide the union into six districts, Bhind was one among them; Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh state on 1st November 1956 as per the plan of reorganization.
