Basti is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are located at Basti Town. Basti district forms a part of the Basti division. Unlike the present day land, it was all covered with forests. Gradually the area was inhabited which cleared away the forests. It was once ruled by Kalhan Raja in the sixteenth century. No account of the origination of its name has been found yet. It became a Tehsil headquarter in 1801 and the district headquarter in 1865. It has since grown in population and importance.
Its maximum length from north to south is about 75 km. and breadth from east to west about 70 km. it has Sant Kabir Nagar on the east and Gonda on the west. It is separated from Faizabad and Ambedkar Nagar by River Ghaghara on the south. Sidharth Nagar borders the district on the north. Bhojpuri is the main language spoken here.
Basti History
The Quit India Movement of 1942 took a serious form in the district of Basti. It was greatly influenced by the proximity to B.H.U from which all the revolutionaries emerged. Poverty also played a major role. Protests and demonstrations were held on August 15, 1942. Also damage was caused to Government property. On the eve of Independence, thousands from the town and surrounding country side assembled at district headquarters in Basti to hail freedom. The Indian tricolor was hoisted at the Collectorate and other government, semi-government and non-government buildings.
Basti Climate
The district experiences four distinct seasons. The winters last from mid-November till the end of February. It is followed by the summer season which lasts till about mid-June. The monsoons last from mid-June to September. The average annual rainfall in the district is 1166 mm. The mean average range of temperature during winter is 9-23 degrees and during summer it is 25-44 degrees. Humidity increases during the monsoon and post monsoon going beyond 70 percent on most days. The climate is overall pleasant during the monsoons.
Basti Culture
The famous poet Sant Kabir lived at Maghar in Basti district. The inhabitants of the district celebrate festivals like Nav Durga, Ramnaumi, Krishna Janmasthmi, Shivratri, Deepawali, Id-ul-Fitar, Id-uz-Zuha, Moharram, Dashara and Holi.
