Karnataka has 30 districts and one of them is Bangalore Rural District, formed in 1986 at the same time when Bangalore district was divided into two, that is Bangalore Rural and Bangalore. Currently in Bangalore Rural district, there are 2 divisions, 4 Talukas, 35 Hoblis, 1,713 inhabited and 177 uninhabited villages, 9 towns, and 229 Gram Panchayats. Proximity to Bangalore city will have its own impact on the district, with sizable daily-commuting population. The rural population is generally agriculturists, although with upcoming Special Economic Zones in these areas for IT and Service sectors these areas are booming. Close to Bangalore Rural District are the towns of namely Muddenahalli-Kanivenarayanapura, the places of the upcoming Sri Sathya Sai Baba University and College of Medicine, Indian Institute of Technology Muddenahalli, Visvesvaraya Institute of Advanced Technology, and "Silk City" Devanahalli are some of the upcoming projects in Devanahalli Business Park, also close to Bengaluru International Airport (BIA). Bangalore Rural district comprises of 22.5% population that are Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, with hinduism is the dominant religion of this district. Bangalore Rural district is basically an agricultural district with incredible outlook for industrialization and also dairy development and needless to say sericulture and these are 2nd least populated district in Karnataka after Kodagu district.
The district is gifted with agricultural and horticultural crops such as rice, groundnut, rice, sugarcane, castor, grapes, and mulberry, etc with sufficient infrastructural facilities such as transport, communications, banking, credit, and marketing provided by government. The regions non-metallic mineral resources are majorly utilized for bricks, tiles, and stoneware manufacture although it is not rich in mineral resources. For decades, weaving has been a major occupation for a large portions of the population. The climatic conditions and soil made it harmonial for cultivation of mulberry, rearing of silkworms, and production of silk, along with other agro-based industries. It is said that Bangalore Rural district to be renamed as Kempe Gowda by the Government of Karnataka. Taluks of Kanakapura, Ramanagaram, Magadi and Channapatna were merged to form the Ramanagaram district in September 2007.
