OverView Of Shahpur


Shahpur is a village in Tehsil Hathgaon, District Fatehpur, in Allahabad division of UP, India. It is located about 25 miles east from District Fatehpur. Khaga is the nearest Railway Station for Shahpur. Some of the nearest villages to Shahpur are Sarai Idrish, Airayan Sadat, Kasimpur, etc. Fatehpur is situated between the cities of Allahabad and Kanpur. It is located between the two famous rivers Ganges and Yamuna. The land between these two rivers is called ”Doaba”. The village of Shahpur came into existence around 1000 Hijri calendar, which is about 450 years ago. The land was gifted to a Muslim Sufi Syed Muhammad Maroof in 986 Hijri by the Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar. Syed Muhammad Maroof migrated to Delhi from Uch Sharif, a town near Bahawalpur in Panjab, Pakistan in 986 Hijri. Town of Uch was the center of Sufism under the Delhi Sultanate. At that time Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar was the ruler of the Mughal dynasty (1556 to 1605 AD). Syed Muhammad Maroof was well regarded and revered as a Sufi religious scholar. As a token of his devotion and respect, Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar by a royal decree allotted some land to the Muslim Sufi Syed Muhammad Maroof. Shahpur was built on the same piece of land. Syed Nusrullah was the son of Syed Muhammad Maroof. They lived and died in a nearby village Airayan Sadat. Their graves are still preserved and visited by the people living in that vicinity. Syed Abdullah and Syed Fatehullah were the sons of Syed Nasrullah. These two grandsons of Syed Muhammad Maroof, namely Syed Abdullah and Syed Fatehullah were the first settlers of Shahpur around 1000 Hijri. They named the settlement as “Shahpur” and are buried there. Their graves are still preserved and visited with reverence by the people of Shahpur. The majority of the inhabitants on this new settlement were descendants of Syed Muhammad Maroof and other Muslim families. The Grand Mosque of Shahpur was built by Col. Muhammad Azam in1253 Hijri. Further expansion and renovation was done by Haji Syed Sajjad Husain in 1944 A.D.In the preceding century, there were innumerable distinguished people from Shahpur with significant achievements and services in various fields in India. Amongst them a few notable were Haji Syed Sajjad Husain, who was a leading landlord, philanthropist, social and political figure of Shahpur, District Fatehpur. Ali Akhtar, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Syed Mohammad Adil, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Syed Muhammad Farooq, who was a Superintendent Police, literary scholar, accomplished writer and poet. Syed Basharat Husain, Advocate High Court, Hyderabad Deccan, Fazal Husain, Advocate High Court, Hyderabad Deccan, and a close associate of Nawab Bahadur Yar Jang, who was a foremost Muslim leader in the princely state of Hyderabad in British India. Syed Muhammad Salim Mahmoodi, author of the book on History of Shahpur entitled “Tareekh Shahpur” published in 1988.
