Fatehpur is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are situated at Fatehpur City. It is situated on the banks of the two Holy Rivers Ganga and Yamuna. The place holds religious significance. It has two sacred ghats named Bhitora and Asni, out of which Bhitora is the site of Sage Bhrigu and as important place for learning. The district forms a part of the Allahabad division. It is situated between Allahabad and Kanpur. It is well connected to them by train and road. The north boundary of the district is limited by river Ganges and southern is ended with river Yamuna.
This land was called Antardesh which means fertile land between two rivers. It was later renamed Madhyadesh which means central region. Avadhi culture is prevalent in the northern part of the region and the southern part is influenced by the Bundelkhand culture. The territory covered by the present day Fatehpur district was part of Vatsa, which was one among sixteen mahajanapadas described in the Buddhist literature.
Fatehpur History
The Mughal road has an ancient temple called Khajuha. The name of this temple is also mentioned in the Brahm Puran. In 1561, this town was visited by Mughal Emperor Humayun while he was on a mission to invade Jaunpur. Mughal emperor Aurangjeb had a fierce battle with his brother prince Shahshuja, and killed him near this place on January 5, 1659. A large beautiful garden called Badshahi Bagh was constructed by him on the occasion of his victory. Also, he set up a lodge having 130 rooms. The administration of Fatehpur switched from Jaunour, Delhi and Kannuaj during the Mughal Empire. The East India Company took control of the region in 1801. In 1814, it was made a sub-division and Bhitaura was made the headquarters which is now a block office. In 1826, Fatehpur was redesigned as District headquarters. There is a place called Bawni Imli which British were hanged to death.
Fatehpur Culture
The people of the district were educated and cultured as it is obvious by the inscriptions on the Hindu temples and Jain and Buddha shrines. The architectures date back to the Gupta and post-Gupta times. The Muslims of the place constructed their own Maktabs some of which were close to the mosques.
