                                                               Yuksom

The sacred town of Yuksom is set against the spectacular backdrop of the beautiful Mother Nature. The place makes one feel that the establishment of such an ethereal beautiful place can be done by one and only Almighty. The distance between Yuksom and Geyzing is 40 Kms. In the archaic times, Yuksom used to serve as the capital city if the state of Sikkim. People come here to relax themselves in the seclusion of the place, gazing at the peaceful and quiet beauty of the nature here.

The altitude of Yuksom is 1780 feet above the sea level. This place acts as an excellent base point for initiating hiking to high altitudes. The word ‘Yuksom’ stands for the phrase ‘the meeting place of three Lamas’. Since, the initial capital of the state of Sikkim was Yuksom, the three great Lamas carried out the coronation of the first Chogyal or moarch was done here.
Adjacent to the imprints of the foot of Latsun Chembo, the coronation throne is kept near to the Norbugang Chorten. Latsun Chembo was considered one of the Lamas, by whom the King was sanctified.

Although, the Buddhist Civilization of Sikkim started in Yuksom, still for a long time, this place continued to be a under developed place. The possible cause for this state can be the facts that this place is isolated from the central part as well as the removal of this place as the state’s capital. However, under the recent initiation by the tourism department, Yuksom is developing to be a popular tourist destination.
