OverView of Karul
Karul is an amazingly beautifull village located at the footsteps on the Sayadri mountian range on the konkan side, Sindhudurg district. The nearest major town is Kankavli 10 kms away and the town of Phonda on the other side 8 kms away. Karul village has well built memorial of a freedom fighter martyr Shree Bhaskar Pandurang Karnik. It is also home to a well know writer and author shree Madu Mangesh Karnik who has received several state and literary awards.Karul village has a beautifull lake which provides drinking water to its residents it is surrounded by thick vegetation and one can easily spot various wild birds of different species.I have several times spotted snakes and kingfishers.There are several species of fishes in the lake and in monsoon it overflows making a beautiful waterfall.Cashew and alphonso mango plantations are the main crops, and the plain fields on western side of village form the extensive rice paddy feilds.There are several mandirs in the village and two schools one primary and one secondary.The common trees in the village are jackfruit, mango,jambul, cashew, ratamba(used to make kokam and kokam drink),vad,pinpal,teak,bamboo,guava,custard apple,Amla, banana etc. In wooded areas one can find several species of wild berries and flowers, Karvanda a sweet and sour berry is very common, while the choroli nuts found on small shrubs are deliciously nutty, the Bhedsa (local name) are also great in taste so are the Yeloo a wild fruit juicy sweet with a touch of sourness with seeds like chikoo is amazing too.Very common to find are the Karande a starchy bulb similar taste to a yam and potato. Nachnne and sesame seeds are grown here. Karul was once a very important village as it fell on the then only highway connecting Mumbai. The highway from Kholapur district threw the amazingly thrilling and picturesque Phonda Ghat and passed threw the village bringing much traffic and commerce. There was a huge glass factory set up with a lot of investment which unfortunately did not run well. With the construction of the new Highway that goes from Humrat by passing the ghat, Karul kind of lost its impotance but I would say it was a blessing in disguise as Karul is untouched by pollution and dressed with riverlets, ponds, hills, forest, rice feilds, farms and beautiful houses.Edit below overview about Karul
