OverView of Liyai Khullen
Liyai Khullen in local dialect is known as Zhaimai - "People of the Sea" that is the literal translation of the word Zhaimai. Base upon the measure of depletion of forest cover and last remaining wild animals, the village could be about 500 years since it was inhabited. With its distinct tone and sound, the dialect has a strong indigenous pull that mellows well with the neighbouring villages and tribe. According to folklore and tradition, the present inhabitants migrated from Saranamai Village. When on a hunting trip the ancestors found a pool of clear water surrounded by beautiful Rhododendrons. The headhunting days ended somewhere around 1930s and tales of inter-village rivalry and clashes that encompass the village history ended in the mid 1960s. The first folks who encountered mainland Indian and Western civilisation were the 32 strong men who were part of The 64th Labour Corp Company from Manipur Labour Corps, men known for their valour and courage, sent to French during the first World War. Development though slow has grown at a pace which have baffled the old folks born under the sun of illiteracy.
Farming and cultivation of paddy is the main occupation of the people. The second most important occupation is farming cabbage as cash crop. One indispensable yet detrimental occupation is cutting down of trees for firewood. Every year, young men head off to the mountains scouting for trees that burns well and last long. Barren hills and scattered trees are the remnants of once lustrous and flourishing forest. Animal husbandry and unorganised handicrafts industry are two major income churning occupations. The wild bamboos found in plenty generate employment for the uneducated youths and skilled craftsmen. Hard work is respected. Discipline and time of festivity is also generously celebrated.
The Plantation festival, Merit Feast and Christmas are the major festivals celebrated here. The Rice beer made in Liyai Village is rated as one of the best in the region. It is a staple diet of the group of people who follow the forefather religion (better known as the Primal religion) and is taken anytime of the day. The famous meandering Barak River originates in this village. The village is surrounded by beautiful hills and villages. The view of the setting sun during cool and clear evenings provide for some of the best moments after a long and tedious day in the fields.
