OverView of Shivthar
Shivthar means sacred (shiv) stratum (thar). Incidentally, the main hill north to this village is alike Lord Shiva's 'pindi'/'bindi'. It is called 'Sulka', i. e. the peak. It consists of visible horizontal strata of the volcanic Deccan Traps.The majority of the people from these village are 'Sabales'. Historically they were called 'Sabhallas' - the people with spears. They are said to have travelled down from north India, - via Kashi/ Varanasi. They seem to be the descendants of 'Sabala' tribe which was instrumental in throwing out 'Shakas'- the Skythians, from Pataliputra- the capital of Magadha. Shivthar is main seat of Sabale families in Maharashtra.
Shivthar is a progressive village and is famous for its contribution to the rationalist movement 'Satyashodhak' during the last century.
Till recent years it was the foremost cultivator of turmeric in the District Satara, which in turn was the foremost producer of turmeric in the Sate of Maharashtra. This was traditionally a 'bagayati' village. Now a days it cultivates mainly sugarcane, with the help of Krishna River waters from the Left Dhom canal.
