Satara History
The British Empire annexed most of the Maratha territory to Bombay Presidency after their victory in the Third Anglo-Maratha war in 1818. They later restored the titular Raja Pratap Singh and Satara was assigned to him. The area of Satara at that time was much larger than what it is today. He was deposed in 1839 and his brother Shahji Raja was placed on the throne. Due to the absence of a male heir after his death, the British took over the land and added it to the Bombay Presidency.
A Parallel Government came into force at the time of freedom struggle. It was called the Prati Sarkar. Krantisinha Nana Patil along with the people of Satara overthrew the British from this land and took charge of the place. The Parallel Government replaced the British Government for 4 and a half years starting from August 1943 to May 1946, during the Quit India Movement of 1942. Similar Parallel Governments were also set up in Midnapore of West Bengal and Purnia of Uttar Pradesh. The Parallel Governments were so powerful that the British did not even try to capture these areas in fear of defeat.
