VEERGOT(Veeraghatta)
Devapura Venkateshacharya, a native of Surapura, was bestowed with sainthood by the divine grace of Lord Sri Narayana and the serpent god Adishesha through the pontiff of Shirooru math Sri Laksmimanoharateertharu in 1796 AD, corresponding to Hindu calendar shalivahan shake 1718 nalanama samvatsara magha shudha panchami.
Sri Laksmimanoharateertharu granted sainthood to sri Venkatesacharya and anointed him as a saint after due religious customs and traditions and conferred on him the new nomenclature of Madhavateertha. On that very day Sri Laksmimanoharateertharu announced that Sri Kanva math was established by sri Madhavateertharu for the followers of Shukla Yejurvediya Kanva sect. The original Kanva math was founded in Veeraghatta (VEERGOT ) undar the auspices of the ruler of Surapura, Raja Immadi Venkatappa nayak(1773 - 1802 A.D)
Veeraghatta is the holy place where Sri Madhava Teertharu performed meditation for 14years. This is also the holy place where Sri Akshobhya Teertharu, the successor to Sri Madhavatheertharu medidated. Later on, during the period of Sri Vidyadheesha teerthara hierarchy when Hunasihole village was gifted to the Math by the ruler of Surapura, The Math was shifted to Hunasihole. In course of time Veeraghatta (Veergot ) was erased from the minds of the people.
Veeraghatta (Veergot ) falls within the Chinchodi gram panchayat jurisdiction of Devadurga Taluka and is located some 1.5 KM from the banks of river Krishna across which Thinthini bridge is built. The bridge is on Bidar - Srirangapattana highway.
