OverView of Selvanathapuram
There was a village called 'Savariarpatnam' a km away from the present location of 'Selvanathapuram' inhabited by Christians belonging to a particular caste. The 'Savariarpatnam' annual festival of St Francis Xavier was very famous those days. Some families from other areas belonging to the same caste of the villagers also migrated to this village. Agriculture was their main avocation.During 1940's, there were frequent fights between two groups in the village. One group left the place and settled in present Selvanathapurama near to Pudukottai-Vadavalam- Pattukottai Road during late 1940's. There was a long pending dispute on the ownership of the lands in the village between the villagers and one Iyer. During the time Savariarpatnam with few other hamlets were called 'Iyankadu' (meaning that it was Iyer's lands). During middle of 1950's, other families in the erstwhile Savariarpatnam village also migrated to the present Selvanathapuram village. The last family that left Savariarpatnam was around 1960. The new habitat of the erstwhile Savariarpatnam residents falls in two Revenue Villages, viz., Theethanipatti village and M. Therkutheru Village. The new habitat in M.Therkutheru village continue to be called as Ayyankadu and that part of the habitat in Theethanipatti village was named as Selvanathapuram during early 1960's.
In the new habitat, there were two parts, viz, Melatheru and Keezhatheru. Each of these had one thatched church each, both named as Savariar (St Francis Xavier) Church. During 1972, the foundation stone was laid for a common new Church and the construction was completed in 1975 and consecrated as Savariar Kovil (St Franis Xavier's Church).
There was a Thinnai Palligoodam (School) in Savariarpatnam. When the new habitat was established, a Govt Primary School was started in 1960, in a place just opposite to the present location of St Francis Xavier's Church. But this was shifted to Ayyankadu, 2 km away during late 1960's. There was a Middle school in Mazhayur village (3 km away) and a High school at Alangudi (11 km away) those days. Hence the affordable children of this village were sent to Christian Missionary schools/colleges in far off places for schooling and graduation. A Nursery School with English as a medium of instruction was started in the village around 2000 and is now upgraded as a Primary School. It is known as Christ the King Nursery/ Primary School.
Still agriculture is the main avocation in the village. Paddy, sugar cane, banana, ground nut, maize are the main crops grown. The first person to join in Govt service was in 1962. Now people from this village work in Govt Departments, private establishments, Educational institutions, etc. Now a number of Technocrats, software Engineers from this village work in countries like Singapur and United Kingdom.
