OverView of Lahul

Lahaul Spiti were orgnised as one district in 1960 with its administrative headquarter at Keylong. Earlier Lahaul and Spiti was a tehsil of kullu sub division which was itself a part of Kangra district. It is made of two diffrent hill tracts Lahaul and spiti and hence named Lahaul Spiti. Valleys glaciers rivers forests passess all are subject of study inclding buildings of ruling dynasty and monestries. Budhism and hinduisam and mix of both is practised in this area. It boarder with international border of Tibet and also influenced by Tibet Budhisim and culture.ruged snow clad mountains are invting to mountaineers and hiker.In the distant past Lahaul spiti was changing hands between Ladakh and Kullu. In the second half of 17th century with disintegration of Ladakh kingdom Lahaul passed into the hands of Kullu Chief. In 1840 Maharaja Ranjit singh took over Lahaul alongwith Kullu and from 1846 to 1941 it  came under contorl of British One has to cross rohtang pass baralacha pass and ta langla passs enroute to Leh from Kullu and Kuzum pass enroute to shimla from Manali. Lahaul Spiti is a big district having international boundry with Tibet. It attainted the status of a district in the year 1960. Till then it was mearely a tehsil of kullu sub-division. The valleys, mountains, glaciers, rivers, forests, pastures, gompas(monastries) , ancient buildings of the ruling dynsasty are the princiepal object of study. The rugged awe inspiring snow clad  mountains are  invitation to hikers, mountaineers and adventureres. The entire district is full of natural scenery exorting the touists and visitors to explore and imbibe its hidden grandeaur. The customs myths , beliefs and converntions of the unsophisicated people are the unique feature of this border highland. Every village or hamlet has a prayer flag fluttering over the Budhist monertry. These shrines are the centres of cultural life of the people that have influenced the religious life for centurries and round whicha their social lives revolves.
                          Lahaul and Spiti which forms now distirct of Himachal Pradesh bordering Tibet, at one time were Waziries or cantons of Kullu Sub-Division.  and  Kullu itself forms a part of Kangra district of Punjab. As is clear from the name Lahaul spiti co prises of two diffrent mountain tracts on known as Lahaur and other as Spiti. Hence the name ofnthe district came into being with formation  of these two parts into a revenue district. The names Lahaul and spiti , have different origins. HiuenTising stated Lahaul 1800 or 1900 li(575 to 610 kms from kiu-lo to but actual it is only 75 kms from Kullu but perhaps Heuing Tsing confused between Li-yul Khotan which is actualy 18oo to 1900 li from kullu and Lo-yu-lo(Lahaul)
