Ratanpur, a historic village nestled in Mithilanchal, Bihar, holds a rich heritage dating back to the 13th century. The village's story is intertwined with the history of the Sen Dynasty, which ruled Bengal from 1230 to 1295 AD. As the Deva Dynasty rose to prominence, the Sen Dynasty's last ruler, Keshav Sen, saw the migration of his lineage. His great-grandson, Ratna Sen, who was a prominent figure and fervent worshiper of Mother Durga, fled to Mithilanchal and established his own fort near the Durga temple, leading to the village's name—Ratanpur.
Ratanpur is also known for its significant role in India's struggle for independence. During the August Revolution of 1942, local freedom fighters such as Pradeep Sharma, Md. Bilat Darjee, and Kappal Kumar sacrificed their lives, earning the site a revered status as Shaheed Sthal (Martyr's Place).
The village is home to a diverse population, including many government employees, and is not solely agrarian. It is known for its multi-caste community, reflecting its inclusive and varied social fabric.
A notable site in Ratanpur is the Mata Ratneswari Asthan, a revered Vaishnavi Durga Peeth located in the eastern part of the village. The worship of Mother Bhagwati here has ancient roots, with local lore suggesting that the temple was established by Baba Bam Bholi Das. The temple's history is somewhat nebulous due to conflicting historical accounts, but it is recognized as a significant place of worship. Devotees from across Mithilanchal and even Nepal visit this sacred site, especially during the Shardiya and Annual Navratri festivals.
The temple's idol represents Durga in her Lakshmi Swarupa form, and worship is offered to a Pindi (a sacred stone) rather than a statue. The absence of animal sacrifice at this temple aligns with its peaceful and spiritual ethos.
