OverView of Tonsen Khullen
Tonsen which is officially known as Tonsen Khullen lies in the borderline of Chandel and Thoubal District of Manipur. It is situated 5 kms away from Sugnu Town. The Burma Sugnu road passes through the village. Tonsen consists of four localities namely Thumkhongching, Khumayai, Mongbung khu(ma)ro, and Warlengphai. It is not know as to how the village acquire its name. Views differs on the meaning of the name 'Tonsen' as well. However, it is believed that the name 'Tonsen' must have been derieved from the word "Teshing' which is one of the local names for Tonsen. Tonsen is one of the oldest villages among the nearby sourounding villages. The neibouring villages of Tonsen includes- Wangkhera in the South-eastern side, Kosantabi in the South, Nungoo-Chairen in the West, Panghantabi-Chingkha in the North. Thumkhongching was the place where the people made their first settlement. Over the period of time the people gradually spread and formed new localities like Khumajai and Warlengphai. Mongbung Khuro as the name suggest was once inhabited by Mongbung group of people. They were similar in all respect with the people of Tonsen except for their peculier nature and a slight varient in their speech. Today the Mongbung group of people have extinct and the remaining few individuals have merged with the people of Tonsen. It is said that people of Tonsen have chosen the place for settlement due to the availability of food such as salt from thumkhong, the fish and eggs from the lake of that time such as Thumkhong, thamlapat, patlingir etc (which was laid by wild duck and other migratory birds). The animals and birds found in the hills and lakes of the time make it suitable for their servival.
Tonsen is inhabited by a Tribal group of people known as Kom. Like any other tribal groups they were animists. Magic was their way of life. They believed to have acquired the art of magic from the legendary 'Rangam'. The umanglai (The god of forest) was one of the gods they used to worship with its temple in the village. There are many festivals similar with their Kom breathens.
Agriculture remain as the main occupation of the people of Tonsen.
