Chamba word is derived from Champa which is name of a flower and was founded in 920 AD by the famous King of the State Sahil Verman and this name is given by him after the name of his daughter Champavati. It is founded on a plain plateau on the right bank of Ravi river and between Zanskar range and Dhauladhar range of Himalayas. He transfered capital of the State From Bharmour to Chamba Earlier He and his ancestor ruled only Bhramour area from Bharmour capital and the state name was Brhampura which was establihed by Maru verman in around 500AD and was only confined to Budhil river valley only and it is Sahil Verman who extended his boundries downwards in Ravi valley upt to present Chamba and further upto Basohali in J&K and upto Punjab and Kangra. Chamba was the capital of Princely state of chamba and main town till April 1948 Main fair of Chamba is Minjar organised during end of July. Chamba is also famous for ebroidery and art Chamba rumal{handkerchie} is very famous. there is famous temple of Lakkshmi Narain. Most people of Chamba town are busnessmen who sell and pruchse goods brought from villages and other do service in Kings court earlier now in district secreatariate or in present govt services. Chamba is the only princlely state whose well documented history is safe since 500 AD due to its inaccessible geographic position where no invader or aggressor reached. there is famous ground naming chaugan in chamba where people gather to celeberate important festivals and fairs including Minjar fair.. Chamba has ancient history insepertable from surrounding districts of Chamba. The first rulers of this area were kolian tribes in 2nd cenury BC who were subjugated by Khasas. Khasas were subjugated by Audumbra. During Gupta period area was under the control of rnas and thakuras. From the 7th centry Gurjara Pratihara or rajputa dynasty came into power.Recornded history of rajput rules is traced to an eminent individual Maru who is supposed to have moved northerwest india from Kalapgrama around 500 AD. He founded his capital in the Budhil river valley at a place called Brahampura which later came to known as Bharmour situated 75 kms to eash of present Chamba. For three hundred years kings of rajputa dynasty ruled from the capital in Bhamour until King Sahil Verma founded town of chamba and shifted capital to Chamba in 920. Since Sahil Verma, the dynasaty ruled the region without successful invasion for around a millinium until British gained power.Isolation of town and rugged terrain is factor of this unusual security. Later Mughal emperor Akabar and Aurangzeb did attempt to annex Chamba but were unsucessful in subjugating this territory into their kingdoms.Later in the later half of 18th century sikhs under Maharaja Ranjit singh controlled the region and even garrison was stationed at Chamba. Ranjit Singh deposed all hill princes including most powerful Sansar Chand Katoch of Kangra but spared Chamba, because Nathu Ram wazir of Chamba had saved life of Ranjit Singh during a compaign and also helped negotiating with King of Kangra. But after death of Ranjit Singh Chamba also drawn into the vortex of disintegration of sikh kingdom. In 1845 Sikh invaded British territory which proved dissastarious with the British defeating Sikhs. Wazir Bhaga was importanat in negotiation in the aftermath and on the advice of Bhaga King of Chamba agreed to British Suzearainty. Many reforms were made under British a post office was established in Chamba in 1863 and a primary School was opened in December 1866 and a hospital was opened By Dr Elmslie of Kashmir medical mission in 1860Chamba is the most beautiful and most rich in culture and art. But it also the most backward district of Himachcal Pradesh needing more funds for its developement. But all the funds dry completely because State capital Shimla is so far from Chamba that it is farthest most district from capital. While the Government focus is on either developing the nearest districts around Shimla and second focus reach only to Kangra or newly added areas from Punjab and Shimla was already developed by British Government in India being summer capital of India and likewise Along with Shimla all districts around it have got attention of Himachal Pradesh govt. after independce. Though it was major district which caused to make Himachal Pradesh along with Mandi , Sirmour and other small princely states to made seperate Himachal pardesh. Chmmba reamined almost undeveloped due to lack of funds or lack of govt attention and being highly mountainous and out of sight of all Governments of Himachal Pradesh and also due to poor and unworthy or sycophant leadership of distirct. It is like a Hydel channel get dry at its end all funds are lost before they reach western most district of Chamba. It is also seculeded and remotest so no body take care of it while like a week child of all healthy babies of a family it needed special attention but it got only neglect and even did not get its own due share. Thanks to the politics of New and Old Himachal New Himachal consider Chamba as old while Old Himahcal consider it as New so both himachal does not own it and so its bad luck continued. There are few only roads no railway not to speak of any airport and no industry no educational institution except few Sr. secondary schools and primary and no any medical and technical instituions and nil industry and no employment except education department. The Goverments of State are callous and blind and think it as a step child to be left on its own fate. Had it been developed or taken care of it would have been earned a biggest revenue by tourisim and horticulture Like Kullu and Manali which got their only road after independence. Because Chamba is the last in the priority of Himahcla Pradesh leadership and bureucracy it will remain undeveloped until a strong leader emerges from Chamba. There was no strong leader except few from Chamba who can raise the voice of this poorest and weakest distt of HP in the assembly or secreteriate of HP which seems far fetched as of now. This is unique district in terms of art and music and culture becuase all its five seperate parts earlier known as Wazarats during princely state time and now known as tehsils of Chamba, Bharmour, Churah, Bhattiyat and Pangi have diffrent entiriely diffrent cultures music and languages too
