OverView of Bharmour
Bharmour earlier known as Brahampur was ancaient capital of Chamba. Maru Verman a prince of Ayodhaya family alongwith his son Jaisthamb reached in the valley of Budhil river through Ravi Valley and after fighting with small chiefs called ranas estblished a kingdom of Brahampura(old name of Bharmour) and founded town of Brahampur and made it his capital. Bharmour is also known for its proximity with Manimahesh Kailash and Chaurasi temples. It is also considered abode of Lord Shiva and called Shiv Bhumi.Because it is abode of Gaddies(shepherd) an intresting tribe it is also called Gadderan in Kangra. It is almost 65 Km from Chamba town. After Maru Verman several kings ruled for almost 400 years from Brahmpura until Sahil Verman captured Ravi valley and transfred his capital to Chamba which he founded in 920 and named after his beautiful dugher Champavati. But people believe it Brahampura is older than Maru and it was garden of Goddess Brahamani and the name is derived from her name. Brahmani Devi temple is 3 to r km from Bharmaour on a ridge. Lord Shiva granted a boon to Brahamani Devi that persons wishing to go on pilgrimage to Manimahesh must have a dip in the pool near Brahamani temple, failing which their pilgrimage will not be complete. Regarding early history of the region it is believed to be inhabited Kolian tribes, who were subjugated by Khasas. Khasas came under the sway of audumbras in 2nd century BC. Audumbras had republican type of government and Lord Shiva was their principal diety. After gupta period area came under ranas and thakuras.Bharmour is famous for its Chaurasi temples which are made in 10th century by Sahil Verma King of Bharmaour to commemorate the sojourn of 84 sidhas(holyme) who happened to visit Bharmour from Kurukshetra on the pilgrimage to Manimahesh and who meditated there their over 100 years. While sosme shrines were already in existence raja built others including Lakshana Devi, Ganesh and Nar singh temples. The temple of Lord Dhramraj is also in the chaurasi and also only in the whole world. All the people living in Bharmour call themselves Gaddies. Word Gaddi means seat or thrown because seat of king of chamba was at Bharmour so it is belived by some that people of Gadheran call themselves Gaddies but few other think Gaddi word has been origninated from word Gaderya which means shepherds and becuase main profession of Gaddies is rearing sheeps and goats and they are in real sense shepherds means Gadariyas so they are called Gaddies. They are widely respected for their honesty friendliness and peaceful lifestyle and even calleld Gaddi Mitra. Traditionaly domiciled in both side of Dhauladhar ranges they mostly reside in Bharmour area of Chamba district but they are also found in Bhattiyat block of chamba and Nurpur, shapur and palampur and Baijnath tehsils of Kangra district. Beaing shepherds they travel with their flocks to higher reaches upto Lahaul Spiti in summer and lower areas of Kangra and even Punjab in winter. Gaddies are not fully nomadic since they have their homes in villages but they are pastoral and keep moving living only for few days in their permanent homes. Over a period of time they have settled down and practice agriculture and horticulture also. They grow maize, barley black gram rajmah and rongi(white rajma) and apples and chestnut etc. They speak Gaddi language and Gaddi man is identified by a typical dress called Chola Dora and Saffa a white turban. Though they now have started agriculture and horticulture but they are mainly shephereds and move with their flocks which they call Dhan in their language and owner or grazer of Dhan is called Puhal and Puhal also keep a particualr type of Dog trained to control sheeps and goats and also to save them from tiger and other carnivoras. they eat thick cake called kukri di roti made from corn flour with goat milk or vegetable made from mustard plant leave known and sarson da sag. They celebetate all national festivals but the also celeberate local festivals like Manimahesh jatra, Minjar, lohri baisakhi patrodu and Dolru etc. Manimahes Yatra is the best to see their customs rituals and traditions. Bharmour is totaly unexplored and full of hidden treasures like holy places hidden sanctuaries wildlife and medicinal plants and herbs. Many people come to Bharmour for meditation travel trekking, and doing researches of wildlife and medicinal herbs, and to study the customs and traditions of local Gaddi peoples of Bharmour.Edit below overview about Bharmour
