OverView of Sunhani
I opened my eyes on planet earth in village Sunhani which can boast of having been the capital of the erstwhile State of Kehloor (now known as Bilaspur) for a period of about 100 years (1555-1656 AD). The village is picturesquely located on the right bank of Seer khud (rivulet), biggest tributary of river Satluj in Bilaspur district. A 23 kilometer long zig-zag mettaled road passing through Chandpur, Kandraur, Bhager, Panol, Nihan etc. and leading to Shah Talai, the abode of legendary Baba Balak Nath, takes the visitors from the District head-quarters Bilaspur to this village which is a store- house of archaeological remains of the medieval period and which has witnessed many princely intrigues and other historical events. Sprawling over an area of 419 hectares on both the sides of the road the village has a population of 1866 persons according to 2001 census comprising 906 males and 966 females. On the basis of population Sunhani is one of the 12 biggest villages of district Bilaspur. The village has a government senior secondary school, a branch post office, a dispensary and a Panchayat ghar. A helipad has also been built here recently especially to enable the chief minister and other VIPs to approach the area more comfortably and conveniently. A keen look in to the settlement pattern of the village reveals that the village was settled under a well planned social hierarchy. The eastern most end of the village was allotted to Upadhyay Brahmins who enjoyed the highest rank in the then social set up as every religious ceremony was conducted by them or under their advice and supervision. They also functioned as the chief priests of the ruling family and the royal temples. Next to them is the sath( hamlet) of Purohit Brahmins who probably were treated to be a little below the Upadhyays as they used to accept daan from their yajmans. In the heart of the village stands a shikhra type Nrisingh temple popularly called as thakurdwara which was built by Raja Bik Chand(Bikram Chand) in the mid sixteenth century. Nrisingh was the principal deity of the then Chandel rulers and many such thakurdwaras built in the same style by the later Chandel rulers exist in several parts of the Kehloor state. It is about 40 feet in height with a covered verandah and a garbh grih. The outer room is meant for bhajan, kirtan etc. while the garbh grih or the inner room houses an idol of Radha- Krishan carved on a big slab of greynite stone along with two open wooden boxes (peerhies) each containing about a dozen small and medium size marble stones symbolising "Thakurs". The palace of the Raja was located on the plateau on the north-western side of the temple.Edit below overview about Sunhani
