Bairagamadinne, which carries the history of the Stone Age
Innumerable inscriptions have been discovered here, the birthplace of Karnataka inscriptions, and they continue to be made. Still, many inscriptions are used to bind cattle, as stones for the walls of houses, as idols of God for worship, as chattels, as stones for fields and as children's toys. Also, the names that have been given to them are still hidden. For example, Potappa's stone, Hadedavara's stone, Madidavara's stone, God's stone, Nilugallu etc. are named by various names.
These inscriptions include donation inscription, award inscription, viragallu, mastikallu, Nishidhi stone, Yupa inscription, Koota inscription etc. But what I would like to discuss with you is our Veeragallu and Masti Kallu. Bairagamadinne is a Kannada borderland, 25 km from Siruguppa taluk of Bellary district, adjacent to the border of Andhra Pradesh. It is a village with some legends and has been neglected by most of the people. Likewise, the hero stones and mastic stones used for children's play took so many years to come to light.
I remember when we were children, we used to climb on those stones, stuck the Anganwadi flour stick on the idol's nose and mutilated it, then the elders shouted 'Hey! The memories of Potappa Devru saying, It's not like Potappa Devru, we can't walk on it, we will see it'' and all the memories of drilling the small stones next to the stone that we used to fight against are still vivid. .Also, the government's negligence towards these is regrettable.
The memorials of the Kalis who fought valiantly for the sake of sovereignty, for the good of the town, for the punishment of evil, with the enemy or with the wild animals and died a heroic death are called viragallu.

Usually the hero stones are decorated with a sculpture of a warrior who died in battle being flown to heaven by nymphs. The details of the inscription below are engraved on most of the veera stones. There are 'shasansahit viragallu' and 'non-statutory viragallu' among the veeragallu.
Similarly, Nammur's Veeragallu is 5.5 feet long and 4.5 feet wide and has no inscriptions. Besides, there are small relief sculptures of a warrior on a horse with a sword going to war and next to him on the left side, there are small relief sculptures of women rushing to war. As the name suggests, mastic stones are carved in memory of the women who sacrificed their lives by offering worship to the deity in the memory of the warriors who died bravely in the war.
These are on the left side of Nammur's Agase, on the left side of the Maremma temple, called Potappa. Also, the two small stones (1 foot wide, 3.5 feet long and 2 feet long, 2.5 feet wide) that are seen on the lower left side of the wall of the same idol are Masti stones, which were drilled until then and kept properly after the birth, so that if someone was pregnant in the past, they would have a smooth delivery. One of these has relief sculptures of 3-4 women worshiping Shiva at the top and 5-6 women at the bottom.
These are the inscriptions of the Vijayanagar Empire, which can be estimated from the 'Raviahal (Mallinathpur) Inscription' which was found in Sri Channakesava temple of the nearby Ravijahal village in 1554 during the reign of Sadashivaraya of the Tulva dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire.
Apart from this, during the renovation of the temple of Ishwara in this town, the powder soil and stones were brought together and poured together. There I found a stone age hand ax (3) and kalgundas made for hunting animals (4) and a small idol round. A rock with a picture is found. People here are defacing these stones by pouring oil and applying lime, vibhuti, saffron, and saffron on these stones which convey regional antiquity and the history of kings. For that, it is necessary to preserve and properly record such inscriptions to create awareness among all about the local history.
