Uttara Kannada also known as North Canara and is also the district in the Karnataka state. It is very close to Goa state and on the North to Belgaum District, on the East to Dharwad District and Haveri District, on the South to Shimoga District and Udupi District, and on the West to Arabian Sea. Karwar Karwar city is the administration headquarters of the district.
Uttar Kannad History
Uttara Kannada was the home of the Kadamba kingdom during 350-525CE. After the defeat of the Kadambas by the Chalukyas, Uttara Kannada district came under consecutive rule of empires like Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagar empire. Famous Arab traveler Ibn Battuta is said to have lodged for a time in the district under the safety of Nawayath Sultan Jamal al-Din at Hunnur. This place is called as Hosapattana and is situated in the Honnavar taluka. Ruins of an very old mosque and its minaret can be seen here.
The district was under the rule of Maratha empire from around 1700 CE. To 1800 CE and it was taken over by British at the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818. The British established North Kanara district as a part of the Bombay Presidency. Bombay Presidency was reconstituted as Bombay State after India's independence. The southern portion of Bombay state was added to Mysore State in 1956 and later in 1972 was renamed as Karnataka.

Kannada, Konkani and Marathi are the languages of Uttara Kannada with Kannada is the dominant language in the district followed by Konkani. People are Hindu composed of majority communities Namadhari, Havyaka, Grama Vokkaligas, Halakki Vokkaligas, Goud Saraswat and minority communities Bhandari, Mogaveera, Komarapant, Ager, Chamagara, Konkan Maratha, Nadavara, Chitrapur Saraswat, Daivajna, Shervegar(Ramakshatriya), Devadasi, Harikant, Gabeet, Kharvee, Gudigara and Vani. Christians of Catholic and Protestant faiths and Islams are thinly spread out in Uttara Kannada. The communities of Islam living in Bhatkal are known as Nawayaths.
