Theni is a typical south district of Tamil Nadu. The Theni city is the headquarters. The district was naturally divided into two regions. Periyakulam, Uthamapalayam and Andipatti taluks are the three major parts of hilly region. This region is known for thick vegetation and perennial streams and the Cumbum valley which is located in Uthamapalayam taluk. It is an important commercial hub for large-scale trading for cotton, grapes, cardamom, textiles and chillies. The weekly market conducted here is the second largest market in Tamil Nadu and ranked fourth in South India. Theni is well connected to Madurai district by established roads and by trains.
Theni History
Theni was separated from Madurai district in 1996 as per G.O. Ms. No. 679 Revenue Department. In 1997, two new taluks were created at Theni and Bodinayakanur. It was a municipal town and later upgraded as Taluk and district headquarters in 1997. The region was less populated before 1900s. Migration was facilitated by Mullaiperyar Dam project which brought some portion of water from Periyar River to Cumcum valley. The influx of populated was from 1890 to 1920. Allinagaram and Bodi were the famous cities during 19th century. At present Theni was rapidly developed as one of the important business place in South India.
