Thane is a district in the state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous district of the nation according to the latest census of 2011. The district headquarters are situated at the city of Thane. Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayander, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Kulgaon-Badlapur, Dahanu, Shahapur, Wada and Vasai-Virar are other major cities of the district. This is the third-most industrialised district in Maharashtra.

The district is in the shape of a triangle. Pune and Ahmednagar border the district from the north, Nashik on the east and northeast, Valsad District of Gujarat state and Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli on the north. The Arabian Sea forms the western boundary, while it is bounded by Mumbai City District and Mumbai Suburban District on the southwest and Raigad District on the south. Thane is a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Thane city is also the administrative headquarters of the Thane district. It covered a distance of 34 kilometers. Thus, the Railway Age in Asia began.

Thane History

Jawahar was a princely state until 1949 when it was merged with Thane district. It became a separate taluka then. Twenty-seven villages and eight towns from Borivali taluka and one town and one village from Thana taluka were transferred to the Bombay Suburban district in 1956. At that time, the limits of Greater Bombay were extended northwards in Salsette. In 1960, as Bombay was divided on bilingual grounds, forty-seven villages and three towns in the taluka of Umbargaon were transferred to Surat district in Gujarat and its remaining twenty-seven villages were first included in Dahanu and later in 1961 made into a separate mahal, Talasari. The Taluka of Kalyan was divided into two in 1969. The two new talukas were Kalyan and Ulhasnagar.

Thane Climate

The area experiences two distinct climates. One is seen on the western coastal plains and the other on the eastern slopes of Sahyadri. The climate that is experienced on the western coastal plains is tropical, very humid and warm. This climate is found in Thane, Vasai, Palghar and Dahanu talukas. The climate on the plains is comparatively less humid. The temperature variation is also more in the eastern part of the district comparing to the western coastal areas.

Four distinct seasons are seen in the district in a year. Winters last from December to February. Summers are from March to May. The southwest monsoon season is from June to September. October and November months constitute the post-monsoon season, which is hot and humid in the coastal areas.
