Sonipat History
Sonprastha was the former name of Sonipat as the myth goes. Afterwards it came to be known as Swarnaprastha. The word Swarnaprastha signifies Golden City. The two Sanskrit words, Swarn and Prashta resulted into the formation of this name. Slowly the tarnishing of the classical name of Swarnaprastha occurred. Then on then it was more commonly known as Swarnpath, followed by the present name of Sonipat. In the Mahabharata, the mention of the name of this city is there. The Pandavas agreed to trade the empire of Hastinapur with the villages of Panprastha, Baghprastha, Tilprastha and Indraprastha, along with this village of Sonipat.
At the time of Mahabharata, the five Pandava brothers established the Sonipat, then known as Swarnaprastha. In exchange for establishing harmony, Yudhisthira asked for five Prasthas, meaning towns, from Duryodhana. This town is one of these five prasthas. Raja Soni, who is one of the Pandava brothers and is Arjunas thirteenth successor, was assigned the town of Sonipat, as per another myth. Both the beliefs are baseless. At an earlier time than Mahabharata, Panini, an eminent grammarian, mentioned, the name of Sonipat in Ashtadhyayi, his famous work. However, no reference to the name of Sonipat has been done in the epic Mahabharata. This gives evidence to the fact that the town already was present around the time of 600 BC.
Sonipat Climate
Sonepat Districts weather is very dry and arid. The summers are enormously hot and the winters are cold as well. The monsoon period, occurring between the months of July and September, experiences gentle climatic conditions. A changeover phase exists in the months of October to November, after the monsoon phase and before the commencement of the winter season.
The end of the month of November sees the beginning of the winter season. Theres a considerable drop in the temperature, during the night and day time during this season. The frostiest month is the month of January. 6-7 degree Celsius is the average minimum temperature each day during the winter months. The temperature reaches the zero degree mark due to the occurrence of cold waves in the winter. As a result, there is a chance of ice formation. From time to time the maximum temperature reaches the 47 degree Celsius mark, during the months of May to June, which is the summer season. The approaching monsoon made the temperature to go down the mercury level to a significant extent in the month of June. But, the temperature stays up during the night time.
