Sitapur is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are situated at Sitapur Town. The district forms part of the Lucknow division. The ancient name of Sitapur was Citapore. It is also a municipal board. The River Sarayan flows through the district. It was a cantonment within the British Empire. It was garrisoned by a British regiment. The actual name of the district is said to have been derived from goddess Sita of the Ramayana. Awadhi is the major language spoken here.
Sitapur History
It is said to be a land of seers, saints and dalits. There is a place called Naimisharanya where Rishi Ved Vyas wrote his Puranas. Sitapur is one of the five destinations that constitute the Panch Dham Yatra according to the Hindu mythology. Misrikh, near Naimisharanya, holds its religious significance due to the belief that Maharshi Dadhichi donated his bones to Devatas for making Vajras. There are a couple of dargahs present here which mark communal harmony. They are Hazrat Maqdoom Shaikh Shaduddin at Khairabad and Hazrat Gulzar Shah. This place was also called Chatyapur or Chitiapur during the time of Akbar as written by Abdul Fazal in Aina Akbari.
The history of Sitapur resembles the rest of the state. The district played a major role in the rebellion of 1857. The native troops quartered in the cantonments fired on their officers, many of whom were killed, as were also several military and civil officers, with their families, in attempting to escape. Sitapur was established by King Vikramaditya after Lord Rams wife Sita. Remnants of ancient, medieval and modern history can be found here. The district of Sitapur has contributed widely in social, historical, political and literary fields. Many of the freedom fighters who fought against the British belonged to Sitapur. Captain Manoj Pandey sacrificed his life in the Kargil War and honored his birth place with Param Veer Chakra.
