Sitamarhi History
Sita, who is the principal character of Ramayana, an epic story, was born in this place of Sitamarhi. Bordering the country Nepal, this district is located. On 11th December, 1972, creation of Sitamarhi District, positioned in Bihars northern portion, took place by taking out portions from the district named Muzaffarpur. Dumra, which is located at a distance of five kilometres in the south direction of Sitamarhi, contains the district headquarters. In January, 1934, due to one of the most severe earthquake ever to occur here, the Sitarmarhi town was shattered and destructed. As a result, transferral of the district headquarters from the Sitarmarhi town to Durma took place.
According to Hindu traditions, Sitamarhi is considered to be a holy place. Back in the era of Treta Yug, the existence of this place can be found. From a pot made of clay and mud, Sita, who is Lord Ramas wife, came into existence. This event took place when Raja Janak was trying to make an impact on Lord Indra for occurrence of rainfall, by tilling the land close to Sitamarhi. It is believed that a tank has been dug out by Raja Janak, at the same site where Sita appeared. Also, as an indicator for the location, stone statues of Rama, Sita and Lakshman were constructed by him, after Sitas marriage. Located to Janaki Mandirs south, Janaki-kund is the name given to this tank. Not much remains from historical period is there in this place, including the 100 years aged Janaki Mandir, which is considered to be a modern architecture.
