Sawai Madhopur District, with Sawai Madhopur tow being its administrative headquarters, is a district of Rajasthan state in western part of India. It shares borders with Dausa District on the north, Karauli District on the northwest and west, the Chambal River, and across it Madhya Pradesh state and Kota District, on the southwest, Bundi District to the southeast, and Tonk District to the east. Khandar, Bonli, Bamanwas, Gangapur, Sawaimadhopur and Tahasil are the major towns of the district. It is famous for the Ranthambhor Wildlife Sanctuary, a Project Tiger Reserve.
The historic Ranthambore fortress lies within the national park. Raja Hammir Dev of Chauhan lienage along with his Bargujar relatives ruled the area for may years. Allaudin Khiljee later destroyed the area. Sawai Madhopur was turned into a planned city by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I of Jaipur, after whom the town was named. The guavas, popularly called "Madhopur guavas", are very famous and popular.
Sawai Madhopur History
Founded in 1765 AD and named after Sawai Madho Singh-I of Jaipur, today Sawai Madhopur is known for Ranthambhor Wildlife reserve. It is a place of very high historical significance. Major changes took place in the political map of Northern India after the Muslim conquest. The Chauhan kingdoms of sapadalaksa and Nodal declined. Govinda, the grandson of Prithviraj Chauhan, after establishing himself at Ranthambhore, ruled the area as feudatory of the Sultan of Delhi. In the aftermath of the situation that arised after the death of Iltutmish, Vagbhatta coquered the fort of Ranthambhor. He ruled from the fort for 12 Years waging continuous battles against the Sultanate. Rao Hamir has also a place in the history of the region.Ranthambhor Fort was conquered by Rana Kumbha in the middle of the 15th century. The fort was taken over by the rulers of Jaipur after the death of Aurangzeb.
