Sangli is a district in Maharashtra. The district headquarters lie at the Sangli city. The district is 24.51% urbanized. The largest cities of the district are Sangli and Miraj. Sangli district also included the industrial town of Kirloskarwadi. Industrialist Laxmanrao Kirloskar started his first factory here.

Sangli has vast production of turmeric and hence referred to as the Turmeric city. It is situated on the banks of the River Krishna. The largest turmeric market in Asia takes place here. It also has many sugar factories. The district has a very famous historical landmark called the Ganesh Temple of Sangli. Hordes of people come here to worship. Sangli is known for Bhadang. Sangli also famous for 'Bhel' Bhel is a dish made by mixing puffed rice, onion, tamarind paste, tomato.

Sangli is one of the largest grape growing regions of Maharashtra. The Government has made efforts to further the wine industry by setting up Krishna Valley Wine Park 30 km away from Sangli. Sangli also generates power by using wind. Suzlon has set up large wind farms around Sangli city with a capacity to generate over 900 MW of power.

Sangli History

Chalukyas made Kundal their capital which is a place around Sangli. Kundal was an ancient village, around 1,600 years old. Kaundanyapur was a part of Karnataka. Vatapi was chosen by Pulakesi I as his capital. Kundal was home to freedom fighters like Krantisigha Nana Patil, Shamrao Lad, Captain Ramchandra Lad, G.D. Lad, Shankar Jangam, and Housabai Jangam.

Sangli Culture

Kundal is near Veerbhadra Temple Hill. This temple has 300 years of history. Kundal is a pilgrimage centre for the Digambar Jains, with thousands of Jains visiting each year. There is a temple built in the memory of Maharaja Jaising.

Many hills surround Kundal including Zari Parshwanath. There are idols of Mahaveer, Ram, Sita and Lakshman which are found inside two caves. Samav Sharan, a large open space on top of another hill, is considered holy by the Jains. They believe that Mahaveer gave sermons to his followers here.

Sangli Climate

Sangli experiences semi-arid climate and has three distinct seasons. Summers are hot and dry and last from February to mid-June. Monsoons hit the place in mid-June and last till October. Winters are mild and cool starting from early November to early February. The total rainfall is about 25.5 inches.
