Saharanpur History
The British overtook the district of Saharanpur in 1803. Active participation was seen from the founders of the Darul Uloom Deoband during the rebellion. They organized masses around Delhi. They did manage to keep the British at bay for some time. Shamli was the centre of all activities. It is a small town within the district of Muzaffarnagar. The cultural and political history of muslims revolved around Aligarh and Deoband after 1857. Deoband was represented by Kasim Nanautavi. Not only did Deoband oppose the British rule, but also supported the national movements, Hindu Muslim unity and thus united India. The revolutionary ideas of Shah Waliullah received support from Deoband. These ideas were helpful in social and political awakening. A school was established in Deoband in the year 1867 by Maulana Nanautavi and Maulana Rashid Ahamad Gangohi. It became popular by the name of Darul Uloom. They aimed at achieving religious and social consciousness by adopting peaceful methods. Deoband Madarsa made efforts for the awakening of Muslims and also promoted nationalism. Thus the district became centre of activity of Deoband School Ulama. The famous revolutionary Maulana Mahmudul Hasan was the first student of the Madarsa. It helped shape the various revolutionary activities and thus furthered the rebellion of 1857.
