Pathanamthitta district is the newest district situated Kerala state.  The headquarters for district is in Pathanamthitta town.  The district is bounded by Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha, and Kollam districts.  It borders with Tamilnadu state on the east.  Pathanamthitta, Tiruvalla, Adoor, Pandalam, Ranni, Kozhencherry, Mallapally, Konni and Koipuram-Kumbanad-Pullad are some of the major towns in the district. Pathanamthitta is famous as the headquarters of pilgrimage tourism due to huge number of pilgrims it receives and well known Sabarimala is situated here.  It has three rivers and a forest cover that has tiger reserve.  This district also attracts many wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

Pathanamthitta History

It is assumed that the regions that form the district were previously under the Pandalam reign, which also had connections with Pandya kingdom.  When Pandalam was merged with princely state Travancore in 1820, the area came under the administration of Travancore. Pathanamthitta district was the center of the "Reunion Movement" in 1930, within the Malankara Orthodox Church, which ultimately led to part of that denomination joining the Catholic Church as the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. The district was created in November 1982 to speed up development.  The creation was done by inclusion of many portions of the erstwhile Kollam, Alappuzha, and Idukki districts.  While the taluks Pathanamthitta, Adoor, Ranni, Konni, and Kozhencherry were from Kollam district, Thiruvalla and Mallappally were from Alappuzha district. The area of Pathanamthitta district became the Eparchy of Pathanamthitta for the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, in 2010 after splitting from the Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum.

Pathanamthitta Climate

Pathanamthitta has modest climate, which is similar to climatic conditions across the State.  Temperature range between 20 C and 39 C The district undergoes 3 different weather conditions winter, summer, and the monsoon.  The winter season sets in from December to February, and summer starts from March to May.  There are 2 rainfall seasons:  Southwest monsoon and the Northeast monsoon.

Pathanamthitta Culture

Pathanamthitta district is famous for its fairs and festivals.  The Padayani is major folk art.  The colorful art, colloquially known as Padeni, is linked to the festivals of many temples only in Southern Kerala.  The art is a mixture of music, dance, painting, and satire.  Sabarimala, Maramon Convention, Anandapalli, and Kadammanitta are few of the major fairs and festivals.  Traditional Keralite festivals like Onam, Vishu and other major Christian and Islam festivals are celebrated.  The area is famous for its cultural heritage and communal harmony.
