During the era of Mahabharata, the Pandava brothers established five cities. It is believed, as the myth says, that out of the five cities, Panipat was one such. Panduprastha was the ancient name of this city. The occurrence of three crucial battles in the history of India, were witnessed by Panipat.

He was originally from the place called Rewari in Haryana. Previously, he had already enjoyed a victory over Akbar and had conquered big states of Agra and Delhi. Vikramaditya is another name of Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya. In the time period of 1553 to 1556, from Punjab to Bengal as well, he attained victory in 22 numbers of wars, against the Afghan rebels.
On 7th October, 1556, his coronation ceremony was held at Delhis Purana Quila. Before the Second Battle of Panipat, Hindu Raj was set up by him in the parts of North India. At the beginning of the battle, the armed forces of Hem Chandra, which was quite large in number, were succeeding. But an arrow hit Hemus eye quite unexpectedly and he lost consciousness. His soldiers took flight upon not perceiving him in his Odha, on the back of his elephant. The Mughals, afterwards, imprisoned and decapitated him. Outside the Delhi Darwaza in Kabul, his head was dispatched, so that it can be hung outside it and the upper part of his body was suspended outside of Delhis Purana Quila. Even though for a short period, however north Indias Hindu Raj, which was set up by Hemu was brought to an end by the Second Battle of Panipat.
Ahmad Shah Abdali was an Afghan invader. In between Ahmad Shah Abdali and the Marathas, the Third Battle of Panipat was fought in the year 1761. Sadashivrao Bhau Peshwa of Pune led the Marathas. Ahmad Shah achieved victory in this battle of Panipat. Many people died from both the parties in the battle. The Third Battle of Panipat was the reason of the Marathas most terrible defeat. The capturing of India by the British was a result of a lack of authority in the region, caused by this battle. Panipat witnessed the birth of the renowned Urdu shayar named Maulana Hali.
