North East Delhi, which is one of the nine administrative districts of Delhi, India  was established in 1997. North East Delhi shares boundaries with Yamuna River on the west, Ghaziabad District to the north and east, East Delhi to the south, and North Delhi to the west across the Yamuna. It is one of the nine revenue districts of NCT of Delhi, formally formed in the year of 1997. Previously, there used to be only one district for whole of Delhi with its head quarter at Tis-Hazari. The district head quarter is located at D.S.I.D.C Complex, Nand Nagri. It is having a great historical, social, economical & cultural significance.

Predominantly rural, the district also has a sizeable urban area. A total of 27 villages are located in the district having all the features of rural India. The district lies on the other side of the river Yamuna having  high density of rural population. It is for this reason that the metro railway started from Shahdara to Tis Hazari.

Decentralization of the DC office was started in 1996 by setting up 27 SDM Offices and 9 DC offices. The SDMs were established in mid-1996 and the DCs began functioning from 1.1.97.
