Mumbai City is a district in the state of Maharashtra. As a city district, it has no headquarters or subdivisions. Mumbai City along with Mumbai Suburban makes up the metropolis of Mumbai.  The other names of the place are Island City, South Mumbai or Old Mumbai. It extends from Colaba in the south to Mahim and Sion in the north. The area was known as Mumbai until the 1960. Mumbai municipality includes both the districts. The city covers an area of 67.7 square kilometers.

Mumbai is the second smallest district in the state of Maharashtra. The jurisdiction of Mumbai Suburban District is from Bandra to Dahisar, from Kurla to Mulund and from Kurla up to Trombay Creek. Mumbai Suburban District is one of the most populated areas of the country. The main river in the district is Mithi River.

Mumba History

The City of Bombay was recognized in the year 150 AD by a renowned geographer Ptolemy. The City consisted of many islands. It was ruled by Marathi Kolis and Agris who are the native inhabitants of Mumbai.

They ruled over the land until 1345 AD. Thereafter, the rulers changed down the history till the Islamic rulers invaded India and conquered some of the islands in 1534 A.D. Later on, the islands were captured by a Muslim ruler from Gujarat and were later conquered by the Portuguese. On the occasion of the marriage of King Charles II of England with the Portuguese princess Infant Catherine, the island of Bombay was passed on the British in 1661 AD. It was ruled over by the British until India achieved Independence on August 15, 1947. Initially, the King entrusted the administration of Bombay to the East India Company. By a Royal Charter under the Regulation XIX of 1827, passed by the British Government, the Collector of Bombay was made the Chief Controlling Authority of the Revenue Administration of Bombay. The Collector of Bombay enjoyed vast authority under the Bombay Land Revenue Act 1876 which was repealed by the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code 1966.

The area experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. It has moderate temperatures with high levels of humidity. Moderate temperatures are maintained throughout the year due to its coastal nature and tropical location. The average temperature is 27.2 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 242.2 cm. The average temperature during summers is 30 degrees and in winters is 18 degrees. Four distinct seasons are experienced here- winters December-February; summer March May; Monsoon June Sep and Post Monsoon Oct Dec.
