Mirzapur is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are situated at Mirzapur Town. It forms part of the Mirzapur division. The districts Sant Ravidas Nagar and Varanasi surround the district on the north, Chanduali on the east, Sonbhadra on the south and Allahabad on the northwest. The district occupies an area of 4521 square kilometers. Vindhyavasini temple in Vindhyachal is a famous place in the district. Various ghats are present here which contain historical sculptures. The ghats are decorated with lights during the celebration of Ganga. It is currently a part of the Red Corridor.
Mirzapur History
The place was founded by Raja Nanner and named it Girijapur. It was named Mirzapur after the British took control. The district dates back to 1760-1770 as it is mentioned in the writings of Tieffenthaler. He mentioned it under the name of Mirzapur, especially as a great mart. The place is also mentioned in the records of Jonathan Duncan who was a resident of Varanasi. Mirzapur was the largest district of India until April 1, 1989. The Naxalites are very active in this region. It is said that Mirzapur was first named as Gangayatan Ghat. It is the place where the Holy River Ganges meets with Vindhya Range. This is considered significant in Hindu Mythology and has a mention in Vedas.
