Meerut is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are situated at Meerut. It forms part of the Meerut division. It is around 70 kilometers away from Delhi. It is second largest city in the National Capital Region of India. It is also the 16th largest metropolitan and 17th biggest city in the country. It is the second fastest developing city in the state. Area wise, it stands third within the state covering an area of 172 square kilometers. It has the 2nd largest army cantonment in the country. Sport goods and musical instruments are produced here.

Meerut History

It was the hotspot for the famous Meerut Conspiracy Case in March 1929, in which several trade unionists, including three Englishmen, were arrested for organizing Indian-rail strike. A street play theatre group in Manchester called the Red Megaphones staged a play based on this plot. It highlighted the detrimental effects of colonization and industrialization. Nobody moved during the British anthem being sung inside the cinema halls. The district faced communal riots in 1982, 1984 and 1987. In 1987, the Hashimpura Massacre took place in which personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary killed 42 Muslims. In 2006, a fire at a consumer electronics "Brand India" fair in Victoria Park Stadium killed over 50 people. But the sources say that the number was 200.

Meerut Climate

Meerut experiences a humid subtropical type of climate. Summers and winters have extreme conditions. Starting from late April, summers last till the end of June. The temperature can go up to 43 degrees. The monsoon arrives in late June and continues till the middle of September. Humidity increases. Winters start by the end of October. The lowest temperature ever recorded was 0.5 degrees. The city receives no snowfall.
