Mahoba History
The Nawab and his forces were badly defeated by the Peshwa. The Maratha Chieftain was given one-third of his dominion by the Chhatrasal for his help. Mahoba, Shri Nagar, Jaitpur, Kulpahar were included in this dominion. The Marathas ceded the Bundelkhand area to the British according to the Treaty of Bessien in 1803 AD. The Subedar of Jalaun took charge of the place until 1858 after which the East India Company took over it. . Mahoba was made the headquarters of a sub-division in the district of Hamirpur. Mr. Carne, the British Sub-divisional Magistrate found refuge in the nearby Charkari estate which was under the rule of Raja Ratan Singh. The Rani of Jhansi got annoyed at this betrayal and asked the forces of Tantia Tope to attack Charkari and capture Carne. Raja Ratan Singh surrendered and entered into a treaty with Tantya Tope. British General Whitloack took charge of Mahoba from the rebels. He arrested a large number of local rebels and hanged some of the prominent men on the trees in the vicinity called Haveli Darwaza. To honor the rebels, an annual fest called Shaheed Mela is organized every year.
