One of the 26 districts of Gujarat state in western India, Mehsana shares borders with the Northern district of Banaskantha, Western ditricts of Patan and Surendranagar , Southern districts of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad and the Eastern district of Sabarkantha . The administrative headquarters of this district is Mehsana city . Vijapur, Bahucharaji, Modhera, Unjha, Vadnagar, Kalol, Kadi, Visnagar, Kherva, Jotana and Khadalpur, Sanganpur are the major towns of the district. One of the largest cities in North Gujarat; followed by Patan and Palanpur, it is situated near Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar,. The city has a number of primary industries including dairy, oil and natural gas works. The local Mehsani breed of buffalo is very famous. The city has the first water park in Eurasia, and the largest iron and steel market in India.
Mehsana History
Its glorifying history dates back to the Mauryan Age, post mauryan age, Gupta Age and the period of Chalukya. It also includes the sultnate age, the rule of the Moghals, Marathas and the Gaekwad. A Rajput named Mesaji Chavda is considered to be the founder of the city of Mehsana. As being quoted in the ancient poems of Jaisinh Brahmbhatt in 1932, Mesaji Chavda established a temple of Goddess Toran and thus founded the city of mehsana on the 10th day of the Bhadarva month in 1358 AD. The city was opened for settlement today thereafter. It is believed that Goddess "Toron" the sole witness to the establishment of mahsana is spreading the light of development through its Akanda Jyot wich is burning for the past 649 years.
The Gaekwads selected Patan as the administrative capital of North Gujarat after they fouded te state of Vadodara. As Patan was situated at a great distance so the the ancient city of Kadi wa made the headquarter of the northern area. The state of Kadi existed right from the Sultanate age. the Goekwads made Mehsana the headquarter of their state in the year 1902 and the northern area was divided into eight provinces Dahegam Atavsuba Kadi, Patan, Vadnagar, Vishnagar, Kheralu and Vijapur. Spread over 4484.10 sqkm. area, the district of Mehsana was comprised of the current Gandhinagar and Patan district was separated from Mehsana district which lies to the central Gujarat. Thereafter having nine talukas, Mehsana district has many special characteristics.
Mehsana Climate
It has an extreme climate as the tropic of cancer passes through the district. It is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. The average rainfall ranges between 800-1200 mm. The district experieces dry or semi-dry climate as there are no dense forests and large hills.
