Lalitpur is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are situated at Lalitpur Town. It forms part of the Jhansi division. The district came into being in the year 1974. The shape of the district is in a shape of the heart. It is mostly surrounded by Madhya Pradesh but it is connected to Uttar Pradesh by a narrow passage. This district is well known for its culture, peace and natural beauty. There are a large number of dams present in the district. Devgarh, Seeronji, Pavagiri, Devamata, Neelkantheshwar at Pali and Machkund ki Gufa are places of cultural and historical importance. Hindu and Jain temples are prominent. The famous Jain temples are Raghunathji, Shivalay, Boodhe Babba, Tuvan Mandir for Hindus & Bada Mandir, Ata Mandir and Kshetrapalji. The district slightly slopes down from the Vindhayas Range. The extreme south is composed of parallel rows of long and narrow-ridged hills. The rivers flow down over ledges of Granite and quartz. The granite chains gradually turn into clusters of smaller hills towards the north of the hilly region.
Lalitpur History
Lalitpur once formed a part of Chanderi which was founded by a Bundela Raja in the 17th century. The Raja descended from Rudra Pratap of Orchha. Chanderi came under the Maratha rule in the 18th century. Chanderi was annexed by Daulat Rao Scindhia in 1811. It was taken over by British in 1844 and it became the Chanderi district of the British India. Lalitpur was made its headquarters. In 1861, Chanderi was returned to Gwalior along with Betwa. Lalitpur was a part of Jhansi from 1891 to 1974. Lalitpur became a district in 1974. The district Tikamgarh is on the north, Sagar on the south and Ashoknagar and Shivpuri districts towards the west.
Lalitpur Climate
The district experiences a sub tropical type of climate. Summers are very hot and winters are cold. The district experiences four distinct seasons. Summers last from March to mid-June. Monsoon season lasts from mid-June to September. Winters last from December to February.
