Kushinagar History
Kushawati is the ancient name of the district. The place finds its roots in the epic Ramayana where this city belongs to Kush, the son of Lord Ram. The Malla kingdom made Kushinagar as their centre. It is one of the four most important cities of Buddhist pilgrimage and it came to be known as Kushinara. Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana after falling ill from eating a meal of a species of mushroom, or possibly pork near a river named Hiranyavati. The stupas and ruined viharas belong to the 3rd century BCE. A lot of construction on this site has been supported by Ashoka. Kasia remained unknown until the 19th century. Due to violent invasions, Kushinagar lost its vitality and eventually was neglected.
