In the state of Himachal Pradesh, Kullu is a district. This district spreads out an area which covers from Rampur village in the south direction to the Rohtang Pass in the north direction. Kullu Valley is the biggest valley in the district of Kullu. Another name, by which this valley is also known, is the Valley of the Gods. In the middle of the valley and on the banks of the Beas River, the town of Kullu is situated. Lug Valley is one more significant valley in Kullu district. Here, for the past 150 years, taking out timber from the forest by the chief forest contractors has been going on and till the present day also, it has been happening. The town of Manali is located on farther north.
In 1846, the entire region of Kangra and Kullu has been seized by the British, from the Sikhs. Even now, the other parts were used by the royal progenies as their residence. However the British bought the more aged Naggar Castle. For vacationing in the summers, Manali and Kullu Valley has recently regarded as popular destinations by the tourists, as a result of the latest disturbances and conflicts, which has been taking place in Kashmir. Sikh and Hindu temples as well as hot springs are located in the eastern section of the district. Also, at Manali, the Hidimba Devi Temple is situated. Nearby Manikaran, numerous Sikh villages are situated. The renowned Malana Valley is located to the northeast of Kullu Valley.
Created by the river Beas, flowing in between Manali and Largi, Kullu is quite a wide and open valley. The exquisiteness of the place and its magnificent hills wrapped by lush forests of Pine and Deodar and Apple Orchards, adds up to the popularity of the place. The track, along which the River Beas flows, puts on a show of a series of brilliance with Pine trees situated on the lower edges over which the lush Deodar forests stands high and tall. In between the Great Himalayan range, Lower Himalayan range and Pir Panjal, the valley of Kullu is packed in.
Kullu History
The name of Raja Jagat Singh is mentioned in the history of Kullu. The fort owned by Jihna Rana, situated over Manali, was captured by him. Also he seized the fort located at Baragarh opposite to Naggar, which was under the control of Rana Bhosal. At the temple of Raghunathji at Sultanpur, the popular Raghunathji idol was mounted. This idol was fetched in from Ayodhya and it was done so under his rule of Raja Jagat Singh. Previously the Rajas tilled the Shaiv and Shktik, but later on as it turned out, Vaishnava Dharma was taken on by them. Apart from doing this, Raghunathji was handed over the Rajas entire territory, by putting his image on a gaddi. After this he came to be Raghunthjis vice-regent. From that time onwards, Kullu was governed in the name of Raghunathji, by the Rajas of Kullu. According to Lahore Agreement in 1846, Kullu was taken into the British Empire in addition to other trans-Sutlej states. Till then Kullu had some good as well as rough times, just like other hill states.
One of the sub-divisions of kangra Distrcit was Kullu. For governing purposes, Kullu took in Lahaul-Spiti, which was a distinct district in the year 1960. In 1963, the status of district was given to Kullu. Till the month of October, 1996, Kullu formed a part of Punjab. However Kullu came to be a district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, when the states were restructured on 1st November 1996.
Kullu Climate
The weather of Kullu stays usually cold and dry. Summer, monsoon and winter are the three principal seasons that are predominant throughout the year. From the month of March to June, the summer season prevails. From July to September monsoon stays and winter comes in the month of October and stays till September. The phase between December and February becomes very icy and severe cold takes place. Usually in the month of December and January, the place receives snowfall. However a premature occurrence of snowfall may take place in the month of November. A greater portion of Kullu stays underneath snow throughout this time phase. However the snow melts quickly, that is it does linger for a great length of time on the ground. 80 cm is the average precipitation. 38.8 C is the highest temperature while minimum remain 5.2 C in winter.
