Kishanganj district, with Kishanganj town as its administrative headquarters, is one of the thirty-eight districts of the state of Bihar in India. It is a part of Purnia division. It shares boundaries with Araria district in the west, Purnia district in the south-west, Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal on the east, and Darjeeling district of West Bengal and Nepal on the north. It is separated from Bangladesh by a narrow strip of West Bengal, which is about 20 km wide. Major rivers which flow through the district are Mahananda, Kankai, Mechi, Donk, Ratua and Ramzan Sudhani.
Kishanganj History
Kishanganj was an important Sub-Division of Purnea district. Owing to the long and hard struggle of seventeen years from people of Kishanganj, which included social workers, politicians, journalist, businessmans, Farmers etc., it was given the status of an independent district on 14 January 1990.
Kishanganj district was a part of Nepal during the Mughal period and was known as Nepalgarh. Mohammed Raza was appointed by Mughal Emperor Shah Alam at Surajapur for administration. He later captured the fort of Nepalgarh and converted its name to Alamganj and shifted the administration to Khagara, which later became Kishanganj .The famous and historical "KHAGARA MELA" is held every year at Khagara, Kishanganj.
