Karnal History
The chief role played in the battle in Mahabharata is Raja Karna, who also established the Karnal city. Karnalaya is the initial name of the city. The son of Kunti whose name is also Karna is the same person, that is, Raja Karna. Consequently, the name, Daanvir Karna has been given to the city of Karnal. This town has always been bordered within the walls and also contained a fortress in it.
The Mughal monarch, Muhammad Shah was defeated in the Battle of Karnal and then taken into captivity by Nadir Shah, a Persian emperor in the year 1739. During this time only Karnal came under the spotlight. In 1763, Karnal was captured by Raja Gopal Singh of Jind. Again in 1785, the reign of the Marathas began here. The Marathas and the Sikhs continued to clash against one another. At last in the year 1795, Raja Bhag Singh of Jind was defeated by the Marathas and took the city away. George Thomas, a commander of the British-Irish military and also fought in this battle, was given the region. In 1811, a cantonment area was constructed by the British. However because the starting of an epidemic of malaria, this cantonment was deserted by the British.
The British captured the fort, constructed by Raja Gajpat Singh. The fort was transformed to form a dwelling place for Dost Mohammad Khan, Amir of Kabul. Many purposes were served by the fort such as it functioned as a jail, as accommodation for native cavalry and also as a house for the underprivileged people. The district school, which was previously located in the city, was transferred from the city into the fort in the year 1862, when the fort was handed over to the Education Department. Till the year of 1966, Punjabs Ambala District contained Karnal. However upon the creation of Haryana, it came under it.
