Karauli District, with the town of Karauli as its district headquarters, is a district of Rajasthan state in western India. It shares boundaries with Dholpur District in the east; with Bharatpur District in the north-east; with Dausa District in the north; and with Sawai Madhopur District in the west. The south-eastern boundary of the district comprises of the Chambal River , which is 5 K.M. far from Mandrayal across which the state of Madhya Pradesh lies. Hills and ravines cover the entire district, but there are no peaks of very high elevation, the highest having the height of less than 1400 feet above sea-level. Minerals of the area include good grade stone and some iron ore.
There are four main temples of high significance in the district: Kailadevi, Madan Mohanji, Shri Mahavirji, Shri Anjani mata ji and Mehndipur Balaji. There some fort also, such as, Timangarh, Mandrayal, and Rawal Mahal.
Karauli History
The town traces its history back to 1348. It is naturally protected by ravines on the north and east, and is further protected by a great wall. The Maharaja's palace is a handsome block of buildings; some of them dating back to the late 18th century. The city was founded in 1348 by Maharaja Arjun Dev Yadav.
