Kaimur district, with Bhabhua as its administrative headquarters, is one of the thirty-eight districts of the state of Bihar in India. It constitutes hilly and forested area and is prone to the influence of bandits. It is a part of the Patna division and the southern part of the district is covered by Kaimur Range and Rohtas Plateau. The Karmnasha and Durgawati rivers flow through the district. The Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary which is home to tigers, leopards and chinkaras, spread over an area of 1,06,300 hectares, is located in Kaimur district.
The Kudra river flows on the eastern side of the district. It shares boundaries with the district of Buxar of Bihar State and the district of Ghazipur of U.P. State bound on the North, district of Garhwa of Jharkhand State on the south and the district of Chandauli and Mirjapur of the U.P. State on the west and the district of Rohtas of Bihar State on the east. Its history is related with that of Shahabad. It was earlier a part of this district. Bhabhua was one out of its four divisions. Bhabua subdivision was later given the status of an independent district, which is presently a part of the Red Corridor
Kaimur History
In the year 1758, Shah Alam had a conflict with Lord Clive of East India Company. He went to Durgawati and with the help of local Zamindar Pahalwan Singh and crossed the Karmanasha River. Subsequently Pahalwan Singh yielded to obey and live on the latter's terms. In the year 1764, Siraj-ud-daula was defeated in the battle of Buxar and as a result, the old Shahabad district was wrested by te Britishers. Raja Chait Singh of Banaras later revolted against the rule but was eventually suppressed by the English. In the famous mutiny of 1857, district came into limelight in the leadership of Kunwar Singh which had a great impact on the independence movement of India. Kaimur and Rohtas districts were carved out of the old Sahabad district in the years 1972 and 1991 respectively. The present Kaimur district was carved out of the Rohtas district to give it the status of an independent district. The rock paintings in the Lehda forest, that is 20,000 years old give the earliest evidence of human habitation in the district
