Jammu District, with its addmiistrative headquarters in Jammu city, is a district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Being the winter capital of the state, it is also known as The City of Temples. Hindus form the majority of the population of the district. People of all religions live in peace and harmony with each other. Mata Vaishno Devi shrine is situated at a distance of 50 km from the city. According to the census of 2011, it is the most populous district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The numerous temples located here create the ambiance of a holy and peaceful Hindu city. It is a pilgrimage tourism destination in India. Due to relatively better infrastructural facilities, it has emerged as the main economic center of the state. It shares borders with Kashmir to the north, Ladakh to the east, and Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south. In the west, the Line of Control separates Jammu from the Pakistan region called Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The majority of the region of Jammu comprises of the Shivalik range, which lies between the Vale of Kashmir to the north and the Daman Koh Plains to the south. The Pir Panjal Range, the Trikuta Hills and the low-lying Tawi River basin surround the district, adding to its beauty and diversity. It is separated from the Kashmir valley by The Pir Panjal range. Dogri is the major language spoken in Jammu.
Jammu History
Jammu has been mentioned in the campaign of Timur. The area was invaded by the Mughals and Sikhs before finally falling under the control of the British. Post-independence, after the Partition it became part of India following the Kashmir war. It came under the control of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji in the 19 century and became a part of the Sikh Empire. Gulab Singh Ji was appointed the ruler of Jammu. Maharaja Duleep Singh was taken by the British to England under the orders of The Company in exile after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Sikh Empire was defeated by the British. The Britishers recognized Maharaja Gulab Singh as the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. Hence he is known as the founder of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. During the partition of India, Jammu was ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh. He along with all the other princes was given the choice according to freely accede to either India or Pakistan, or to remain independent. The princes were however advised to accede to the adjacent territory, taking into account the geographical, demographic and ethnic issues.
Jammu Climate
Jammu district has a sub tropical climate. The weather is hot and dry in summers and cold in winters. Nights are generally cooler as compared to the neighbouring areas of Punjab due to its location the foothills of the mounains. Minimum temperature is around 4 Degree Celsius and maximum temperature is around 47 Degree Celsius. Rainy season generally starts from the end of June or the beginning of July. Average rainfall in the district is about 1246 mm.
Jammu Tourism
Known for its landscape, ancient temples, Hindu shrines, Mubarak Mandi Palace, Amar Mahal Palace, which is now a Museum, gardens and forts, Jammu attracts thousands of pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi shrine and Amarnath every year. It is also very famous as a favorite adventure tourism destination. Jammu's historic monuments present a unique blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture styles.
