Jalandhar District

Out of the 22 districts in the Indian state of Punjab, the district of Jalandhar is one. Jalandhar is the capital city. During the middle part of the 1990s, a distinct district called the Nawanshahr District was formed. Until then, this district used to be an element in the initial Jalandhar District, apart from the Balachaur Sub-division. The region between the two rivers namely Beas and Sutlej is known as the Bist Jullundur. The region of Jalandhar is present on the southern portion of Bist Jullundur. The southern border of the region is made of the river Sutlej, whereas the western border is formed by the river Beas. 

On 5th March in the year 1931, as per the Gandhiji Irwin Pact, the discharge of Mahatma Gandhi and also all the political captives took place. At the same time, the Civil Disobedience Movement was taken off the table. Bhagat Singh along with his two companions namely Raj Guru and Sukhdev were sentence in the famous Lahore conspiracy case. They were hanged on 23rd March of the year 1931. The police cremated their corpses in secrecy close to Husainiwal, which is located on the right hand side embankment of Sutlej. 

A demand was made in the year 1942 by the Congress that the British should totally and unconditionally quit from India. In the same year, the Congress initiated the famous Quit India Movement. On 9th August of the year 1942 Gandhiji along with all the Congress members were taken into the police custody. In the July 1947, the Indian Independence Act was passed by the British Parliament. Thus, India gained its much awaited independence on 15th August 1947. With an enormous eagerness and gusto the independence was celebrated; however the celebrations was tainted with communal riots and mass evacuation of minority groups of people from the either side of the border, which took place following the partition of India.

The weather condition of Jalandhar remains quite wet and humid. This place experiences a sub-tropical climate with chilly winter months and heated summer months. The months between April and June are the summer months and the months between November and February are the winter months. 48 degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius is the temperature range during the summer months. 19 degree Celsius and -5 degree Celsius is the temperature range during the winter months. During the rainy season, the weather remains quite humid. 70 cm is the average yearly precipitation.
