The district of Jabalpur is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in the town of Jabalpur. The District is located in the Mahakoshal region of Madhya Pradesh, on the division amid the watersheds of River Narmada and Son, but generally within the valley of the Narmada, that runs through the famous george known as the Marble rocks, and falls of 30 ft. over a rocky ridge. Comprising of a long narrow plain running north-east and south-west and shut from all sides by highlands. The plain, which forms an offshoot of the great valley of the Narmada, is covered by a rich alluvial deposit of black cotton-soil in its western and southern portions. The north and the east belong to the basin of River Son, a tributary of the Ganges and Yamuna, the south and west to River Narmada basin. The district is well connected by rail from Mumbai to Kolkata, and the katni junction by branches by two other lines.
As of 2011cencus it is the second most populous district of Madhya Pradesh, after Indore. It is surrounded by Katni towards the north, Umaria towards north-east, Dindori towards east, Mandla towards south-east, Seoni towards south, Narsimhapur towards south-west and Damoh towards north-west.
Jabalpur History
After India's independence in 1947, Jubbulpore became Jabalpur. Because of Bapu's strong connection and his affections towards the city of Jabalpur, after the death of Bapu, Beohar Rajendra Simha carried his mortal remains on his shoulder; with heavy heart Pt. R.S. Shukla, Beohar Rajendra Simha, Seth Govind Das and other eminent personalities immersed the urn in the holy River Narmada on 12 February1948 in the Ghats of Tilwara. In 1950-51, the Central Provinces and Berar formed the state of Madhya Pradesh and the congress leader Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla became the first Chief Minister of Jabalpur.
The city of Jabalpur was the first preference for the capital of newly formed state of Madhya Pradesh, despite, Bhopal was declared as the capital. The decision was amended based on the context that Jabalpur is a defense base, even though many capital cities viz. Lucknow, Dehradun, Delhi, Secunderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Shimla, Patna, etc too have cantonments and other strategic defense establishments.
Jabalpur Climate
The climate of Jabalpur is humid and subtropical, typical of North-Central region of India. Summer enters in late March and stays up to June. With average temperature reaching up to and beyond 45 C May turns out to be the hottest month. The monsoon enters in early October, with a total rainfall of average 55 inches. Winter enters in late November and stays till early March. January is the coldest month with the average temperature of 7 degree C, due to the southwest monsoon moderate rain occurs between 35 to 38 inches during the months of July to September.
Jabalpur Culture
Jabalpur is popularly known as Sanskardhani or the cultural capital of Madhya Pradesh, whereas Bhopal is Rajdhani or political capital and Indore is Vanijyadhani or economic capital. The reason behind the tag of Sanskardhani due to long terms significant associations of Pritish Nandy, Roopkumar Soni, Makhanlal Chaturvedi, Harishankar Parsai, Beohar Rajendra Simha, Subhadrakumari Chauhan, Rehman, Prem Nath, Aadesh Shrivastava, Prof Gyanranjan, Raghuvir Yadav, and more recently Abhas Joshi and the culmination of many cultures etc., and most profoundly, Beohar Rammanohar Sinha the internationally recognized artist-painter from Jabalpur he built and designed the original Constitution of India.
